Este libro trata sobre las relaciones entre el Reino Unido y África Occidental, desde mediados del siglo XIX y gran parte del siglo XX, incluyendo Canarias, cuando la economía se hace global a raíz del triunfo de la revolución industrial. Estos contactos se analizan a través de la trayectoria de una empresa de actividad fundamentalmente marítima, Elder Dempster, la cual fue clave para la ocupación de la costa occidental africana por el Imperio Británico. Su autor, el catedrático de la Universidad de Liverpool Peter N. Davies, ofrece una visión positiva de la acción y presencia de esta y otras empresas europeas de África, en contraste con las interpretaciones que cuestionan la aportación beneficiosa de los agentes económicos europeos en este continente.
Abstract
This book shows the relations between the United Kingdom and West Africa, since the mid 19th century and much of the 20th century, including Canary Islands, when the economy becomes global as a result of the triumph of the industrial revolution. These contacts are analyzed through the trajectory of Elder Dempster, a primarily maritime activity company, which was the key to the occupation of the West coast of Africa by the British Empire. Its author, Professor of the University of Liverpool, Peter N. Davies, offers a positive view of the action and presence of this and other European companies in Africa, in contrast to interpretations which question the beneficial contribution of European economic operators in this continent.
