The University of Salmanca maintains a trajectory that, somehow, we could place in the conventional historical periodization: medieval, modern and contemporary stage. During the first one, the University of the city aside the river Tormes is no more than a legal university and a peninsular prominent university. In modern centuries it becomes one of the most famous and influential universities of the Hispanic Monarchy and of the Roman Catholicism and, after this classic and creative stage, it goes plunging in a provincial decline that, dragged by the nineteenth century, and will not return the recover its importance until the course of the twentieth century. Once these facts are explained, we will try to develop in the present text the most outstanding characteristics of the different periods, with attention to its varying levels of understanding: goverment institutions, economic foundations, educational system, cultural trends and social aspects.
